Kentucky's preschool education programs are available for all
four-year-old children whose family income is no more than 150% of
poverty; all three and four-year-old children with developmental
delays and disabilities, regardless of income; and other four-year-
old children as placements are available based on district
decision. The preschool program is designed to be developmentally
appropriate for young children. "Developmentally appropriate" is
defined in law to mean that the program focuses on the child's
physical, intellectual, social and emotional development, including
interpersonal and motor skills. in Kentucky Preschool Program
classrooms actively engage children so they will gain the skills and
knowledge they need to enter primary school ready to achieve and
excel at learning. Kentucky Preschool classrooms focus on the
cognitive, language, physical, social, and emotional development of
each child.

Curriculum and Assessment
Knox County Schools implement a program called Success For All (SFA).
Knox County Preschools follow the SFA Preschool Program called
Curiosity Corner. Curiosity Corner is a comprehensive instructional
program for three- and four -year-olds that enhance children’s
language skills, their early literacy and mathematical concepts,
their social and self-help skills, and their self-concepts. This
program provides structure and routine, giving the children a sense
of security, all while providing a balance between teacher-directed
and child-directed activities.
Everyday Math is a Preschool Mathematics Programs that is
implemented in our preschools. This program builds a foundation for
basic skills, provides repeated guided instruction, and
age-appropriate activities.
Creative Curriculum is the assessment that in used for the
preschools throughout the county. This assessment provides an
authentic, observation-based assessment that creates a picture of
each student’s individual progress.
Schedule
Knox County Preschool is on a different schedule than the other
grades in the county. Our program is a full-day program,
Monday-Thursday. There is no Preschool on Friday.
Registration
Preschool registrations are typically held in the summer prior to
school starting in the fall, and are held at different times and
elementary schools throughout the county. At registration the
following items are needed for the child that is registering:
• Preschool Application
• Immunization record
• Birth Certificate
• Social Security Card
• Physical
• Eye Examine
Along with the items needed the child registering will be screened
to determine eligibility and to identify any possible developmental
delays.
Eligibility
To qualify for preschool in Knox County the child has to be one of
the following:
• 3 and 4 year olds with disabilities or developmental delays
• 4 year olds eligible whose family income is no more than 150% of
poverty

qualified teachers

with hands-on learning
• promotes literacy
and language development and pre-math skills

as individuals

to explore, question and discover answers
• allows for
observation and recording of each child’s ongoing growth and
development to plan activities
• recognizes children
as learners
The Knox County District now offers preschool programs in all of
our elementary schools with hours of 8:00-3:00 Monday through
